Choosing A Gift For a Whiskey Lover
When it comes to choosing a gift for a whiskey lover, it’s not the hardest task in the world – a bottle of single malt will always be gratefully received. However, if you want to get them something that will be somewhat more permanent, there are plenty of other choices available to you.
Whiskey is a spirit which carries a huge sense of tradition with it, and it comes with a host of peripheral accessories to enhance the drinking experience.
Whiskey flasks, whiskey glasses and books about whiskey are always popular choices. You can even get drinking games – because drinking whiskey is fun.
Here are a few suggestions for the whiskey afficionado in your life.
There’s no doubt about it, the right glass can really help to create just the right ambiance when drinking whiskey. There is a huge variety of different styles and shapes of glasses available, and different whiskey buffs will have different preferences.
Classic Crystal Whisky Glass
I like one with straight sides and a pattern cut into the side. Nothing too elaborate, just a fairly minimal geometric arrangement of lines and diamonds works well in my opinion. Others will have different tastes of course.
I don’t put ice in my whiskey, but for those who do, this is a good choice of glass as it will have plenty of room for ice cubes.
Glencairn Whiskey Glass
The tulip shaped bowl holds the whiskey and lets you appreciate the depth of color. The stem curves up to a narrow aperture which channels more of the whiskey’s aroma towards the taster’s nose.
It has a short, stubby stem, which is designed to make it easy to balance on a table or comfortable to hold in your hand.
I have a few of these, and they really do work. The aroma of the whiskey in one of these is considerably more powerful than if you were to put the very same whiskey into a straight sided glass.
There are a couple of things about the glass that aren’t quite so nifty. In the first place, the glass opening is small – which makes sense when it comes to channeling the bouqet of the whiskey. However, if you’re buying a glass for someone who likes to put ice in their tipple, there isn’t really enough room.
Of course, you could always go for the Glencairn Crystal Canadian Whiskey glass. That has a larger and wider bowl, with plenty of room for ice if you want.
The second thing to note is that the glass is relatively tall and thin and, because of the tulip shaped stem, you have to tip it back at quite a steep angle to get the whiskey out.
I tend to use these when I’m tasting a new whiskey for the first time and I want to get a good whiff of the aroma. When I’m just having a casual drink, I tend to use a straight sided glass.
However, these really do make a great gift for anyone who is serious about whiskey tasting and who wants to appreciate all of the subtle nuances of aroma which might be missed in a standard glass.
Rocking Whiskey Glasses
These are carefully balanced so that they rock and roll on the table, but never tip over. These can be quite entertaining, as long as you haven’t had too much of the good stuff of course.
They could make a nice novelty gift for the whiskey lover who has everything – and who likes to live dangerously.
Whiskey Decanter As a Gift
A whiskey decanter is another good choice, especially for someone who takes their whiskey a little seriously. A whiskey decanter can be a very elegant way of showing off a whiskey to full effect rather than just pouring it straight from the bottle.
You don’t need to decant whiskey of course. It’s not like wine, it won’t react with air – due to the fact that it has a much higher alcohol by volume content. However, if you want to showcase a nice whiskey – or if you don’t want the label to be shown – a whiskey decanter is the very thing.
There are any number of diffferent styles to choose from. Personally speaking, I like one that is fairly plain and without too elaborate a pattern etched into the side.
It lets you see the depth of color of the whiskey better. However, use your knowledge of the person your choosing the gift for and try to pick a style that will suit their individual taste.
You can pay a lot of money for a whiskey decanter, but you can certainly pick up some very nice ones without having to break the bank. You can opt for a decanter on its own, which is perfectly acceptable, or you can go for a decanter and glass set.
Whiskey Hip Flask
There are many different styles, sizes and materials to choose from, so you’ll almost certainly be able to find something that your intended gift recipient won’t have already.
Prices start very low, you’ll find a perfectly decent hip flask for less than $15 – or you can pay a lot more if you want to mark a very special occasion.
On the subject of special occasions, these make great gifts for groomsmen – and you can have initials, dates or a short message engraved onto them to make a memorable keepsake if you like.
One of the best ideas I’ve seen is a hip flask with a collapsible shot glass hidden in the body of it – like the original shot flask – available on Amazon. And if you’re not sure what the benefits of that are, watch the short video below:
Books About Whiskey As A Gift
One thing that most whiskey buffs enjoy almost as much as drinking whiskey is talking about drinking whiskey. Most are very happy to tell you about all of the whiskies that they have sampled thus far – and quite probably to outline their plan for the next sampling.
Truly dedicated whisky lovers normally have their own opinion and theories about what makes a really good whiskey really good, theories which often become more expansive the more they imbibe.
Sometimes these theories are even backed up by a little research, and if not, a book on whiskey might serve to rectify that.
On a more serious note, whiskey is a spirit which has a wealth of tradition and history behind it – so a good book on the subject may be a very welcome gift.
Fun Whiskey Gifts
As mentioned previously, whiskey is a drink which has a lot of tradition and history associated with it. Even so, whilst it should be treated with respect, there’s no need to take things too seriously. Even the most dedicated whiskey lover will have his/her sense of humor – and if you’re choosing a gift for one who likes a laugh and a joke, there are plenty of whiskey related options.
For example, I just love this whiskey flask hidden inside a “good book”. There’s space inside the cover for you to write a personal message – you could even have the flask engraved if you want to.
And for those who really want to sneak a little tipple into virtually anywhere that they shouldn’t really have it, how about these covert flasks? They’re disguised as tubes of sunscreen and each one can hold 8 ozs of your favorite brew.
In fact, you can get whiskey flasks disguised as, or hidden in, a variety of different objects. You’ll find ones which are disguised as cell phones, shampoo or conditioner bottles, cameras – you can even get ones which are hidden inside ties and scarves – check out covert liquor flasks on Amazon…
